Research Interests

My research focuses on processing-structure-property relationships in electronic ceramics. There are two foci to my work: (1) Energy conversion and storage materials and (2) 2D behavior. All of my research topics are united under the creation and control of interfaces and elucidating their effects on the electrical and thermal properties of materials. The first focus includes research on high temperature piezoelectrics, high temperature thermoelectrics and solid-state batteries with an objective to achieve structural batteries. The second focus examines oxide based heterointerfaces and 2D oxides. I already have established research on piezoelectrics, thermoelectrics and oxide based heterointerfaces and I was able build facilities with broad range of capabilities. Currently my focus has been to establish research topics under solid state batteries and 2D oxides. These topics are designed in a way that they naturally align with each other. For example, moving forward the type of oxide hetero interfaces I will be processing include electrolyte films, and the 2D materials which I will be exfoliating include cathode materials in Li-ion batteries overlapping with my interest in solid state batteries. The ability to process both heterointerfaces which are supported 2D nano-sheets and exfoliated free-standing 2D nano-sheets will allow investigation of fundamental effects of interfacial and surface characteristics on variation in properties, their applicability and functionalization.

Teaching Interests

I have been teaching three distinct classes, two of which I started from scratch (EMSE 328/428 and EMSE 405). The third one is a laboratory class (EMSE 330) with two sections. The experiments we cover in the laboratory class include the heat treatment of steels, precipitation hardening in Al-alloys and the mechanical properties of glass. EMSE 405 is a graduate course I teach which covers thermodynamic relationships between properties in the presence of electric work, the critical boundary conditions for characterization, how bonding and quantum mechanical treatment of electron motion lead to band gaps,
the anisotropy of properties ranging from 1st to 4th rank, how microscopic and macroscopic properties are
related in dielectric materials and how they affect the behavior as a function of frequency including relaxation mechanisms and impedance spectroscopy, effects of point defects including Kroger Vink Diagrams and the piezoelectric/ferroelectric/electrostrictive materials. EMSE 328/428 uses different applications which introduce a fundamental understanding of structure-property relationships in a range of scales including electronic-, ionic-, crystallographic-, domain- and micro-structure. The applications covered include rectifiers, transistors, light emitting diodes, solid oxide fuel cells, capacitors, actuators, pressure sensors, thermal cameras, PTCRs, and varistors. Also covered are the fundamentals of sintering and colloidal science. In the near future, I am working on introducing the HoloLens into my classroom.
